New Year, Safer Home: Your January Home Safety Checklist
Share
Start 2026 with a safer, smarter home.
January is the perfect time to audit your home’s safety systems, update your security measures, and organise your living space for peace of mind. A few small steps now can prevent big problems later.

1. Test Smoke Alarms & Replace Batteries
Smoke alarms save lives. Make sure each smoke alarm in your home is working, especially in bedrooms, hallways, and living areas. If your alarms are older than 10 years, consider replacing them. Photoelectric smoke alarms are ideal for detecting smouldering fires common in Australian homes.

2. Inspect Fire Extinguishers & First Aid Kits
Check that fire extinguishers are within their expiry date and first aid kits are fully stocked. Keep these items accessible in high-risk areas such as kitchens, garages, and workshops.

3. Declutter High-Traffic Areas
A tidy home is a safer home. Remove unnecessary clutter from entryways, hallways, and living areas. Clear spaces reduce fire hazards, prevent trips and falls, and keep escape routes accessible.

4. Upgrade Door Locks & Security
Check all exterior doors and windows for sturdy locks. Weak locks make it easy for intruders to gain access. Consider installing a smart lock for keyless entry and remote control, giving you peace of mind even when you’re away.
