Which Smoke Alarm Do I Need?
Renters and owner-occupiers in existing homes
For most existing homes, a battery-powered photoelectric alarm with a 10-year sealed lithium battery is all you need. Battery smoke alarms like these require no electrician and no annual battery changes: fix the bracket to the ceiling, twist the alarm in, and you are done.
Rental properties and homes being sold (especially QLD)
Queensland landlords must have interconnected photoelectric alarms compliant with AS3786:2014 installed now; owner-occupiers have until 1 January 2027. Wireless RF models meet this requirement without any rewiring or trades.
New builds and major renovations
The National Construction Code requires 240V hardwired alarms with battery backup in new builds and substantial renovations. These must be installed by a licensed electrician. For properties prone to humidity-related false alarms, the PSA Lifesaver LIF6800 features the Advance Sensor, a detection chamber designed specifically for Australian conditions.
Common Smoke Alarm Terms
Two terms appear in almost every product listing. Here's what they mean and why they matter.
Photoelectric Smoke Alarms
All Australian state and territory fire services recommend photoelectric alarms for residential use because they respond faster to slow-burning, smouldering fires, the type most likely to occur in a home while people are asleep. To understand more, read our guide on why photoelectric alarms are recommended.
Interconnected Smoke Alarms
When smoke alarms are interconnected, every alarm in the home activates the moment any single alarm detects smoke. This is particularly important in larger homes or multi-storey properties, where a person in a bedroom may not hear an alarm sounding elsewhere. Wireless RF models achieve full interconnection without an electrician or any hardwiring: the alarms communicate directly by radio frequency.
About This Range
All smoke alarms in this range are photoelectric and certified to AS3786:2014, the Australian Standard required under residential fire safety regulations nationwide. Whether you need home smoke alarms for a simple battery swap-out or a full interconnected system, models are available from PSA Lifesaver and PSA Homeguard across battery-powered, wireless interconnected, and 240V hardwired options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are your smoke alarms compliant with AS3786:2014?
Yes. Every alarm in this range is certified to AS3786:2014. You can confirm this on the individual product listing, and the certification mark is also printed on the back of the alarm itself.
Can I install a smoke alarm myself, or do I need an electrician?
Battery-powered models are DIY. You secure the mounting bracket to the ceiling with two screws, then twist the alarm into place. No trades are required. 240V hardwired models are different: under Australian law, any connection to mains power must be carried out by a licensed electrician.
How many smoke alarms do I need?
Requirements vary by state and territory, but fire services across Australia recommend installing alarms in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey of the dwelling. In Queensland, alarms are also required in any room that connects sleeping areas to the rest of the home where no hallway exists.
When should I replace my smoke alarms?
The manufacture date is printed on the back of the alarm. All 10-year smoke alarms in Australia must be replaced within 10 years of that date, regardless of whether they appear to be working. If your alarm is chirping intermittently or has passed the 10-year mark, replace it now.
