Queensland Smoke Alarm Legislation (2027): Requirements & Compliance

From 1 January 2027, all Queensland homes must meet the new Queensland smoke alarm legislation: to have photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms in set locations within the premises. Use this short guide to ensure compliance and pick the right alarms for your home.

What Your Smoke Alarm Must Have

Make sure your photoelectric alarms are compliant with AS 3786:2014 and interconnected so that when one sounds, they all sound. This gives you critical seconds to act. Additionally, note the following details:

Sensor: Must have a photoelectric sensor.

Power: Hard-wired or sealed 10-year lithium battery

If your dwelling already has 240 V hard-wired smoke alarms, any replacement must also be 240 V photoelectric smoke alarms. In short: you must use the same type of power source you can't downgrade to battery-only models.

New or renovated homes require interconnected photoelectric alarms, either hard-wired or using non-removable 10-year batteries. But for existing hard-wired systems, replacements must remain hard-wired.

Condition: Under 10 years old and working when tested.

Consider wireless interconnected smoke alarms that link without extra wiring for faster setup.

False Alarms: The PSA Difference

Low quality alarms can trigger from dust, steam, or insects. This can be actively detrimental to their usefulness in saving lives, especially if people lose trust in their reliability

With larger detection chambers, smart signal processing, and insect-resistant mesh in PSA’s smoke alarms, they can help cut false triggers while being effective alerts to real smoke.

  • Built with insect-resistant mesh

  • Tried and Tested in the harshest of Australian Environments.

  • Improved with a larger detection chamber

The Heart of PSA’s Superior Smoke Detection

PSA alarms use an enhanced photoelectric sensor that spots visible smoke from slow-burning, smouldering fires earlier than ionisation models, giving you more time to act.

  • Fewer false alarms: Larger detection chamber, smart signal processing and insect-resistant mesh help ignore dust, steam and bugs.
  • Smartly calibrated: High sensitivity to real smoke, low sensitivity to everyday interference.
  • Built to standard: Independently tested to AS 3786, backed by 40+ years of Australian engineering.

Bottom line: PSA alarms alert you when it matters, so when they sound, you know it’s real.

“Second time I have purchased online from this company. Both times, someone in their office helped me get the correct item specs. Makes life easy. Very happy!”

  • Mark - Sydney

“I was referred to the Home Safety Store by PSA Products following a query to confirm that the LIF6800 was compatible with our 14 year old LIF5000 base which it was. Ordered two to replace the old units and they arrived well packaged and as described. Fitted into the existing bases no problem saving the cost of having an electrician install another brand of smoke detector.”

  • Bill Melksham - QLD

“All good.Connected well, added heat detector for home solar battery in garage.

    All connected well.

FAQs

Why are interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms required for homes in Queensland?

These types of alarms are more sensitive to smoke and can respond earlier to slow-burning fires. They also alert the whole home when a fire starts, making them ideal for life-saving early warning and whole-home coverage.

Do they have to be wired in?

No. You can choose wireless interconnected smoke alarms or hard-wired models. Both are fine as long as every alarm interconnects and meets AS 3786:2014.

Who should handle installation?

A licensed electrician should fit hard-wired units for smoke alarm installation in Queensland. Wireless kits suit confident DIYers if you follow the manufacturer's instructions.

How many alarms will I need?

At least one in each bedroom, one in the connecting hallway, and one on every storey. Add more if your layout needs extra coverage.

How do I look after them?

Test monthly, vacuum the vents to remove dust, and replace any unit that fails a test or reaches 10 years from its manufacture date.
